แพะคือผู้ค้นพบกาแฟ

การค้นพบกาแฟโดยแพะมีต้นกำเนิดจากประเทศเอธิโอเปีย (Ethiopia) ซึ่งเชื่อกันว่าเกิดขึ้นราว ศตวรรษที่ 9 โดยมีตัวละครหลักคือ คนเลี้ยงแพะชื่อ “คาลดี” (Kaldi)

วันหนึ่ง คาลดีสังเกตเห็นว่า แพะของเขามีพฤติกรรมแปลกไป — มันกระโดดโลดเต้นอย่างร่าเริงผิดปกติหลังจากกินผลเบอร์รี่สีแดงจากต้นไม้ชนิดหนึ่ง (ต้นกาแฟ) ด้วยความสงสัย คาลดีจึงลองชิมผลเบอร์รี่นั้นดู และพบว่ามันทำให้เขารู้สึกกระปรี้กระเปร่าเช่นเดียวกับแพะของเขา

คาลดีจึงนำผลเบอร์รี่ไปเล่าให้ พระในอาราม (monastery) ฟัง ในตอนแรกพระมองว่าเป็นสิ่งชั่วร้ายและโยนผลเบอร์รี่ลงไปในกองไฟ แต่เมื่อเบอร์รี่ไหม้ มีกลิ่นหอมที่น่าหลงใหล ลอยขึ้นมา พระจึงเก็บเมล็ดที่ไหม้เกรียมนั้นมาบดและชงกับน้ำร้อน กลายเป็น "เครื่องดื่มกาแฟ" ถ้วยแรกในประวัติศาสตร์

The discovery of coffee by goats originates from Ethiopia, believed to have occurred around the 9th century. The main character in this tale is a goat herder named "Kaldi."

One day, Kaldi noticed unusual behavior in his goats — they were energetically jumping and frolicking after eating red berries from a certain tree (the coffee plant). Curious, Kaldi decided to taste the berries himself and discovered that they made him feel just as invigorated as his goats.

Kaldi then shared his discovery with monks at a monastery. Initially, the monks considered the berries to be evil and threw them into the fire. However, as the berries burned, a captivating aroma filled the air. Intrigued, the monks collected the roasted seeds, ground them, and brewed them with hot water, creating the first "cup of coffee" in history.

Some sources suggest that Kaldi's goats resembled "mountain goats" known for climbing trees in search of food.
Although this legend remains a local folklore without 100% historical proof, it has become widely embraced in coffee culture. Today, many cafes and coffee brands use the name "Kaldi" as a tribute to the legendary goat herder.
