Trick or Treat เป็นประเพณีที่สืบทอดกันมาในวันฮาโลวีน ซึ่งมีที่มาจากการผสมผสานของวัฒนธรรมยุโรปหลายๆ ประเทศ โดยเฉพาะในยุโรปตะวันตก

ย้อนกลับไปสมัยโบราณ ชาวเซลต์ (Celts) ซึ่งเป็นชนพื้นเมืองของเกาะบริเตนและไอร์แลนด์ ได้จัดเทศกาล "ซาวิน" (Samhain) ในวันที่ 31 ตุลาคม เพื่อเฉลิมฉลองจุดสิ้นสุดของฤดูเก็บเกี่ยวและเป็นวันที่เชื่อว่าโลกของผู้เป็นและผู้ตายสามารถเชื่อมต่อกันได้ ชาวบ้านจะจุดไฟ ปลูกข้าวโพด และนำอาหารไปถวายวิญญาณ

ต่อมาในยุคกลางของยุโรป มีประเพณีที่เรียกว่า "Soul Cake" ซึ่งคนยากจนจะเดินไปตามบ้านต่างๆ ร้องเพลงให้กับครอบครัวที่สูญเสียคนรัก และครอบครัวนั้นจะให้ขนมปังหรือเค้กแก่พวกเขา ซึ่งเป็นการแลกเปลี่ยนอาหารกับการสวดภาวนาให้กับวิญญาณ

หลังจากที่ประเพณีนี้แพร่หลายมาถึงอเมริกา ได้มีการเปลี่ยนแปลงและปรับให้เข้ากับวัฒนธรรมสมัยใหม่ จนเกิดเป็นประเพณี Trick or Treat ที่เด็กๆ จะแต่งตัวเป็นผี หรือสิ่งมีชีวิตต่างๆ แล้วไปเคาะประตูบ้านในละแวกเดียวกันนั่นเอง

Trick or Treat is a tradition celebrated on Halloween, originating from a blend of various European cultures, especially those in Western Europe.
In ancient times, the Celts, who were the native people of the British Isles and Ireland, held a festival called Samhain on October 31. This marked the end of the harvest season and was believed to be a day when the worlds of the living and the dead could connect. People would light bonfires, plant corn, and offer food to spirits.

Later, in medieval Europe, there was a tradition called “Soul Cake.” The poor would go from house to house singing for families who had lost loved ones, and these families would give them bread or cakes in return for prayers for the souls of the deceased.

When these traditions reached America, they evolved and were adapted into the modern-day custom of Trick or Treat. Children dress up as ghosts, goblins, or various creatures and go door-to-door in their neighborhoods. If the homeowner offers them candy or treats, the children won’t play a “trick” or prank on the house.
